The INPS contribution statement

The estratto conto contributivo (contribution statement) is the list of everything you have paid in over a working life, and it is free. It is worth looking at when you are forty, not sixty-six, because a missing period is easy to recover while the company still exists.

01 · The document

What the INPS contribution statement contains

The statement from INPS (the Italian social security institute) shows, year by year, the contributions credited in your name: from employment, self-employment and freelance collaboration, plus the notional periods recognised without any payment.

It is not a pension calculation: it is an inventory of what is there. Your pension is estimated from it, but the first step is checking that the inventory is complete.

  • Periods of employment, with the employer, weeks credited and taxable pay.
  • Periods of self-employment: artisans, traders, farmers.
  • Gestione Separata (the INPS scheme for collaborators and freelancers), for collaborators and professionals without their own fund.
  • Notional periods: military service, compulsory maternity leave, paid unemployment, cassa integrazione (wage support during short-time working), sickness.
  • Buy-backs and consolidations already completed.
  • Voluntary contributions, if authorised and paid.
Contribution periods with professional pension funds (lawyers, doctors, engineers and the others) do not appear on the INPS statement: they have their own records and must be checked separately with the fund concerned.
02 · How to get it

Where to view it

It is free and you can get it yourself. The only requirement is having SPID, CIE or CNS (the Italian digital identity systems).

  1. INPS personal area

In the citizen's social security file, under the section for your insurance record. You download it as a PDF.

  2. Through a CAF or patronato

If you have no digital identity, you request it with a proxy through a CAF (the authorised tax assistance centre) or a patronato (welfare advice office). It is the route for people who do not use the online portals.

  3. Pension simulation

The same portal offers a tool that estimates the start date and amount based on the data held.

  4. Professional pension funds

Each fund has its own portal and its own statement: look at them together with the INPS one, not instead of it.

03 · What to look for

The gaps found most often

They are not rare and they almost never depend on you. These are the cases that come up again and again.

  • Contributions not paid by the employer: the employment is recorded, the payments are not. It is the most frequent situation and the easiest to recover, as long as the company exists.
  • Short contracts never recorded: seasonal work, cover jobs, probation periods nobody reported.
  • Domestic work: quarters not paid by a household employer are a classic.
  • Periods abroad: they exist but sit in the other country's records, and they are counted through totalisation.
  • Notional periods not credited: maternity, military service, unemployment that appear in other documents but not on the statement.
  • Wrong taxable pay: the weeks are there but the amount is wrong, and it affects the calculation.

Why time matters

Whether a gap can be recovered depends almost entirely on how old it is.

  • If the company still exists, putting it right is a routine procedure
  • If it has closed, you go through the INPS protection funds (fondi di garanzia), with time frames and limits
  • For contributions that are time-barred, the route is setting up a life annuity (rendita vitalizia), paid for by the employer or the worker
  • Payslips and contracts you have kept are worth their weight in gold: without documentary evidence nothing can be reconstructed
Let's look at it together
04 · The application

The request for correction

When something is missing, you submit an application to correct your insurance record, attaching proof of the employment.

  • You need payslips, the contract, the letter of hiring or termination, or the CUD form (the former annual income statement) for the period.
  • Without documents you can rely on other evidence, with less certain outcomes.
  • INPS investigates and checks with the employer, if it still exists.
  • The correction affects the pension calculation and, in some cases, the very right to a pension.
  • If the employer has defaulted and the contributions are time-barred, there is still the life annuity: it is expensive, but it is the last resort.
05 · The options

Buy-back, consolidation, voluntary contributions

As well as correcting errors, there are tools for adding contributions where there never were any. They cost money and need to be weighed up with the figures in hand.

Buying back your degree

Turns the years of the official course length into contributions. The cost varies widely depending on the period and the calculation system that applies, and it is partly deductible.

Ricongiunzione (consolidation)

Brings periods paid into different schemes together into one. It has a cost and is not always preferable to totalisation.

Totalisation and cumulation

They let you use periods in different schemes without transferring them and at no cost, with their own calculation rules.

Voluntary contributions

With authorisation, to cover periods without work. They must be requested beforehand, not after the event.

The right question is not "how much does it cost" but "how much earlier does it bring my pension, or how much does it raise it". A buy-back that costs a lot and moves the start date by a few months is a poor deal; one that lets you meet a requirement you could not otherwise reach is a different matter.
06 · The timing

When it is worth checking

The short answer: earlier than people usually do.

  • After every change of job, to check that the last employment has been recorded.
  • If you have had short contracts or many employers: that is where omissions cluster.
  • If you have worked as a domestic worker or carer, where payment depends on a private employer.
  • If you have worked abroad, to understand what is recorded where.
  • At least ten years before retirement, to leave time for corrections.
  • Before deciding on a buy-back: without the full picture you cannot work out whether it pays.
Frequently asked

The questions that keep coming up

My employer did not pay my contributions. Do I lose those years?

Not necessarily. If the employment can be proved, you apply for a correction and INPS starts recovery from the employer.

If the contributions are time-barred, there is still the life annuity, which can be charged to the defaulting employer or, as a last resort, paid for by the worker. The payslips from that period are the evidence that makes all of this possible.

Is it worth buying back my degree?

It depends on the cost, the effect on the start date and your income, because the cost is partly deductible and so the net cost is lower than the nominal one.

The assessment is made case by case, with the statement in front of you: without knowing what you already have, nobody can say whether adding years helps.

I worked in Romania. Do those contributions show up?

No, they stay in the Romanian institute's records. They are counted when you apply for a pension, through European totalisation.

Each country will pay its own pro rata share. The page in Romanian covers this point in detail.

Do I need an appointment, or can I download it myself?

Downloading it is free and immediate with SPID. Reading it is another matter: the scheme abbreviations, the notional periods and the qualifying weeks are not self-explanatory.

The value of the appointment lies in the reading: understanding whether a gap is an error, a notional period never claimed or simply a year in which you did not work.
