ISEE in Turin
Calculation, types of ISEE and the procedure through a CAF.
Open30 September 2026 · ISEE
Every year, between January and February, CAF (tax assistance centre) offices fill up with families who need to renew their ISEE (the Italian means-test indicator). Those who arrive with complete documents leave with the DSU submitted; those who arrive without them have to come back. Here you will find what to prepare, for whom and why, so that everything is done in a single appointment.
The ordinary ISEE certificate is valid until 31 December of the year in which the DSU was submitted, the DSU being the dichiarazione sostitutiva unica (single self-declaration) from which it is issued. From 1 January you need a new DSU, even if nothing has changed in your family.
Renewal matters above all to people receiving benefits that continue over time: the Assegno Unico (the universal child benefit), the nursery bonus, reductions on school and university fees, social bonuses on utility bills, reduced rates for municipal services. Without a valid ISEE, some of these benefits are reduced or stop.
How the calculation works, which types of ISEE exist and how the procedure runs are explained on the page about the ISEE in Turin. Here we focus on the preparation.
This is the point that causes the most confusion. The ordinary ISEE does not look at the year that has just ended, but at the one before: for both income and assets, the reference is the second year before the DSU is submitted.
Example. If you submit the DSU in January 2027, the income to declare is that of 2025, and the figures for financial and property assets are those as at 31 December 2025. INPS (the Italian social security institute) already obtains many of these figures from the Agenzia delle Entrate (the Italian Revenue Agency); others you have to provide yourself, and those are exactly where the mistakes cluster.
If your financial situation has worsened since that period, for example because you lost your job, the ordinary ISEE may not reflect it. In those cases, and if you meet the requirements, you can ask for a current ISEE (ISEE corrente) after obtaining the ordinary one.
The list applies to each member of the household for ISEE purposes, which does not always match the registered family unit at the registry office. For minor children and for anyone with no income or assets, there is less to prepare, but identity documents are still needed.
For every financial account the DSU asks for two separate figures: the balance at 31 December and the average balance over the year. Banks make them available, usually in your online banking area or on request, but the time it takes varies from bank to bank.
The practical advice is to ask for them at the start of January for all the accounts of every household member: the main current account, but also the forgotten deposit account, the prepaid card with an IBAN, the child's post office savings book, the account opened for an online purchase. A forgotten account is the most frequent reason the certificate shows a discrepancy.
Mixing up the two figures, or giving the same number for both, is one of the mistakes described in the article on the five mistakes that put the ISEE wrong.
In December create a folder, even just on your phone, with a subfolder for each member of the household. In January add the balances and average balances as soon as they are available, the rental contract and any changes: a birth, a marriage, a separation, an inherited home, a car sold.
Before the appointment, check that there is a figure for every account and every property. With the folder complete, the DSU is filled in at one sitting and the certificate arrives without annotations to correct. For the related benefits and for special cases, such as households with parents who do not live together or members with a disability, you will find the details on the page about the ISEE in Turin.
Yes. The certificate expires on 31 December in any case, and the new DSU looks at a different reference year: income and assets change even when the family stays the same.
Yes, there is a pre-filled DSU, which you access with your digital identity. Many figures arrive already filled in, but those on financial accounts, properties and the household must be checked carefully: they are the same ones INPS then cross-checks.
A birth, a marriage, a separation or a child moving out to live alone all change the household. In these cases you can submit a new DSU reflecting the updated composition: the new certificate replaces the previous one for benefits applied for from that point onwards.
After the DSU is submitted, INPS normally issues the certificate within a few working days, sometimes longer at peak times. That is one more reason not to wait for the last weeks of February.
